A cash register with an electronic data processing section is esp. applicable in self-service shops. It enables the best use to be made of the available space and requires less space than mechanical data processing types. The data input and output functional units (2,5,8) are constructed as separate devices which are connected to the main unit (1) performing data processing and storage via electrical cables or by optical signal transfer devices. One data output device is an illuminated character table (2) mounted so as to be rotatable on a console (3). The console is connected to the base unit (1) via a cable (4) and is designed to be able to operate remote from the base unit. A visual display unit may also be connected to the base unit via a cable, as can the input keyboard (5), intercom station (8), code reader (11) etc.
