In a gear finishing or other machine having a base 13, a table support 15 mounting a reciprocal table 19 having a head stock 27 and a tail stock 21 for supporting a workpiece gear W or spline to be finished, a pedestal 35 on the base mounting a motor-operated transmission 39 and a depending machine head 129 mounting a power-driven abrasive honing, or other type finishing gear 127 rotatable upon a horizontal or vertical axis, the table support or head being relatively adjustable with respect to the other to bring the workpiece teeth into operative position with respect to the teeth of the finishing gear, the improvement which comprises a first gear train 55, 59, 64, 70, 111, 117 connecting said transmission to said finishing gear for rotation thereof at a predetermined speed. A drive spindle 29 is journalled through said head stock adapted for axial drive engagement with the workpiece gear to be finished. A second gear train 55, 69, 75, 81, 101 interconnects said transmission with said drive spindle for rotation at a predetermined speed. A compensating support device 47 mounts a portion of the second gear train to provide for continuous drive thereof during relative vertical adjustments between the table and head. The first gear train has an accumulated back lash therein as does the second gear train. A back lash compensator 107 is mounted on the table and connected to the second gear train for equalising the back lash in both trains for the initial positioning of the finishing gear teeth with respect to the workpiece teeth. The compensator further functions to modify the accumulated back lash of the second gear train, alternately advancing and retracting the teeth of the workpiece gear with respect to the teeth of the finishing gear, either manually or automatically. Thus, on feed of the workpiece in one direction, one side of the teeth of the finishing gear engages one side of the workpiece gear teeth, and upon feed in the opposite direction, the opposite sides of the finishing gear teeth engage the other sides of the workpiece gear teeth. <IMAGE> |
