The compressible wrapping (2) is used on buried pipes (1) at bends, where thermal pipe expansion is concentrated. The wrapping surrounds the pipe, can be of uniform or differential compressibility, has a closed cellular construction, and is compressed by surrounding earth (3) to provide pipe support. Definite lengths (D1,D2) at a bend may be wrapped in trapezoidally felted fabric (2) in a reinforced sheath (4), and the wrapping (2) may have a circular unstressed cross-section. The ends of the sheath (4) may be fixed to the pipe (1) by collars.
