The seal is partic. for the edge of a gate valve slide, and has a metal distance piece enclosed by elastic material with a bead having sealing lips on both sides. The inner surface of the seal, towards the end face (32) of the valve slide (34), is convex in the unloaded state, and compression chambers (20) are formed in the elastic material. These chambers can run for the whole length of the seal, or alternatively only along the arms of it. They can be formed by continuous passages sealed off from the outside.
