<p>A method of turning over the end of a flexible elastomer tube to fit it around a surrounding support pipe of larger diameter, the flexible tube being mounted on an inner, smaller pipe or the like, is as follows: The inner pipe, together with the flexible hose is clamped in an axially movable mounting; a set of splaying mechanisms each equipped with one splaying finger is brought adjacent to the tube; an upsetting ring is slid axially onto the free end of the flexible tube, causing it to bend over around the splaying fingers. Clamps on the splaying units then grip the turned-over of the tube and the fingers expand it outwards radially away from the inner pipe. The outer pipe of larger dia. is then brought up and fitted into the turned over end of the tube, whereupon the splaying fingers release the end of the tube, are retracted outwards and move away. In particular for connecting a flexible tube to an outer metal pipe in an air spring for an automobile suspension. The tube subsequently acts as an inflatable bellows. The method enables the tube to be uniformly bent over, all the fingers being moved simultaneously to prevent damage, while at the same time the inner support pipe is not touched by the mechanism, so that its lacquered surface is not damaged.</p> |
