Diesel motor powered electric drive for aerial ropeway - has braking system and antiparallel diodes with switches in armature circuit

The electric drive uses a diesel engine to drive a d.c. generator, which powers a d.c. motor which can rotate in either direction. In the armature circuit for both machines is a variable resistance for a braking system. Connected across the armature circuit are two antiparallel diodes, each in series with a switch. In series with the variable resistance is a control circuit so that the braking resistance is varied independently of the nominal speed of the d.c. motor. The generator is controlled by an applied voltage so that the load fed back to it during braking is maintained within a predetermined limit. Both switches are operated according to the direction of rotation, i.e. one is closed for each direction so that its diode is in the blocking direction for the armature current flow.
