Process for improving the absorptive capacity of thermomechanical down pulp in the course of its continuous production from chips. The process takes place in a finishing machine (fine mill) in a steam atmosphere at a temperature of 100-160 DEG C. The chips are impregnated with water or with an aqueous solution which contains one or more inorganic substances and one or more organic, complexing substances individually or mixed and has a starting pH of 6-9 and is added in such an amount that the pH of the finished stuff is between 4.5 and 7. In addition one or more surface-active substances are added, separately or mixed, to the chip material as it enters the grinding zone of the finishing machine.
