The base is formed of a frame and of crossmembers consisting of sections (14) and of elastic strips (17 to 20) and supported by the longitudinal sides of the frame. The heights of the crossmembers may be adjusted individually by varying the depths of insertion of the strips (17 to 20) into their sections (14). The supporting surface of the base may thus be modelled and satisfy the morphological and physiological conditions of the user. <IMAGE>
