1,212,461. Disproportionating toluene. SINCLAIR OIL CORP. 8 Jan., 1969 [8 Jan., 1968], No. 1214/69. Heading C5E. Toluene is disproportionated to benzene and xylenes by contact, in the absence of molecular hydrogen, at 700-1100‹ F., and a weight hourly space velocity of 0À2-5À0, with a concurrently moving bed of a crystalline aluminosilicatecontaining catalyst having an alkali metal content below 1 wt. per cent, a silica : alumina molar ratio from 2 : 1 to 12 : 1, pore openings of 8-15 Š, and having associated therewith both rare earth and hydrogen ions. The rare earth ions are preferably cerium, and the catalyst may be present in a matrix of amorphous silica-alumina xerogel. One of the exemplified catalysts also contains 33% inert alphaalumina fines. The xylene : benzene ratio in the product may be increased by adding to the toluene feed one or more methyl-aromatics having a total of 9 or 10 carbon atoms and 1 to 4 methyl groups, e.g. 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene. |
