The charging mechanism includes a hopper forming an air lock via a bottom shutter (7); and the hopper rests on a weighing machine. The actual wt. of material delivered from the hopper to the furnace at atmos. pressure, i.e. when shutter (7) is closed, is obtd. from gb(t)=(y(t) - a)/b; but when shutter (7) is open, the formula gb(t)=y'(t) - (a-a'p(t))/(b-b'p(t)) is used. In the two equations, y(t) and y(t') are the weigher scale readings at atmos. pressure and at furnace pressure; a is the weigher scale zero; b is the slope of the weigher; p is the furnace pressure obtd. in volts via. a transducer; and a',b' are parameters defining the alteration of a and b per unit of furnace pressure.
