The rectangular grid (1) is common to both gate and fence panels and its traverses (3) have a slightly larger diameter than those of a second grid (2) which slide into the traverses to form a gate of variable width. Wing nuts (6) tighten the two units together. Bolts (7) are provided with the gate which can be hung right handed by turning it through 180 degrees. A fence panel uses the grid in conjunction with a square rectangular grid with sliding traverses to vary the width but with fixing plates (8,9) at its outside instead of bolts.
