The apparatus for low-pressure carburisation of batches of workpieces comprises a means for transporting them through its various chambers. The transport means take the form of a roller conveyor (22). Batches (4) of workpieces pass successively through a vacuum-tight entry chamber (6), a vacuumisable heating chamber (7) with a nitrogen atmosphere under a pressure of 1-2 bar, at least one carburisation chamber (10, 11) with carburisation gas under a pressure preferably of 10-30 mbar, at least one diffusion chamber (13, 14), and finally a quenching chamber (17) for high-pressure gas quenching.
