PURPOSE:To prepare a chlorinated toluene in high paraselectivity, by the direct chlorination of toluene with chlorine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and a novel halogenated phenoxathine compound as a cocatalyst having high paraselectivity. CONSTITUTION:A chlorinated toluene such as p-chlorotoluene is prepared in high selectivity, by the nucleus-chlorination of toluene with chlorine at 0-80 deg.C under atmospheric pressure, in the presence of (A) a Lewis acid catalyst such as SbCl5, and (B) a cocatalyst composed of one or more halogenated phenoxathine compounds of formula [R is H or 1-4C alkyl; (a) is 0-4-m; (b) is 0-4-n; m+n is 2-8: X is Cl, Br or F] such as dichlorophenoxathine. The cocatalyst can be obtained by reacting a non-substituted or methyl-substituted diphenyl ether with sulfur or sulfur chloride in the presence of AlCl3, and chlorinating the resulting phenoxathine. |
