Paper pulp bale binding is fusion released electrically, across pairs of electrodes. Conveyed banded bales traverse a turntable. Current across articulated twin-disc contacts melts the metal binding, obviating manhandling and hand tool cutting of recalcitrant tight binding. Water sprinkling prevents pulp burning and discolouration. A turntable (3) between the conveyors (14,15) receives a tied (6) bale (2). Sideways swinging arms (7,9) carry electrified roller discs (10), pressing on one or both sides of the spike (17) held bale, at two different heights for assured severance. Feed, holding, table rotation and the pressure exerted by the electrodes are automatically controlled.
