New method for regulating the relative growth of graminaceous plants, leguminous plants and cotton comprises treatment of the leaves, stems, roots, or seeds of these plants or the soil in which they grow with an N-nitro-aniline salt of formula (I) (where R1 is halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-3C haloalkyl, or 1-3C haloalkoxy; R3 is halogen, Me or OMe; R5 is halogen, CF3, OMe or 1-4C alkyl; n is 1 or 2; and Z is Na, K, Li Ag or a ca cation of formula (Ia) (where R7 and R8 are 1-3C alkyl, R10 is H, halogen, 1-3C alkyl or 1-3C alkoxy, R9 and R11 are H, 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, -C6H3UV or W-piperidino, U and V are H, halogen, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy, CN or CF3, W is H or 1-3C alkyl, and the broken lines indicate optional double bonds) when n is 1, or Ca, Mg, Ba, Sr, Zn or Co when n is 2). (I) are new and claimed provided that R1, R2 and R5 are not all halogen when Z is Na, K, Ba or Ag. (I) are regulators of the relative stem length of graminaceous and leguminous plants and of cotton and can thus be used to prevent "lodging" of such plants. In addition, application of (I) brings about an increase in yield in barley crops. Results of tests for plant growth regulant activity are given in the specification.
|
