PURPOSE:To obtain an image forming material having high sensitivity and high resolution and easily forming a film by using a specified methylpentene polymer or copolymer prepared by decomposing a methylpentene polymer or copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A methylpentene polymer or copolymer is decomposed to prepare a methylpentene copolymer having 0.2-<0.4dl/g intrinsic viscosity measured in decalin at 135 deg.C and soluble in <=100 times by weight cyclohexene at 25 deg.C or a methylpentene copolymer having similar properties and contg. >=90mol% methylpentene units. The resulting polymer or copolymer is used as an image forming material, and a 4-methyl-1-pentene polymer or copolymer is desirably used. The 4-methyl-1-pentene polymer or copolymer preferably has 180-232 deg.C maximum m.p. measured with a differential scanning calorimeter.
