<p>On the platform of the trolley is a hoist, the bottom end of which ends in a universal joint carrying an electromagnet, which is employed to lift a lid upwards out of a charging hole on the top of a coke oven. Platform also carries a work cylinder employed to swivel a pair of lever arms on pivots. The movement of arms is synchronised by a pair of gear segments; and each carries a scraper knife employed to remove carbonaceous deposits from the sealing surfaces on lid. The result is that a lid can be lifted, cleaned, and then replaced in the charging hole. Arms are pref. swivelled outwards when the lid is moved vertically, but are driven inwards so the knives can scrape lid. Rapid cleaning of lids to ensure good seals so that gases cannot escape from the oven.</p> |
