The mower-cultivator gardening unit comprises a combustion engine capable of driving interchangeable equipment. It comprises a main body with a push bar and a housing containing an engine-driven transmission to which the equipment can be coupled. This equipment is either a mower with reciprocating horizontal cutter bars or a rotary cultivator. The housing may contain two driven shafts at right angles to one another, of which one is horizontal and projects from the housing at both ends (to drive wheels or cultivator rotors), whilst the vertical shaft has a square coupling end projecting below the bottom face of the housing.
