The system stores low-temp. heat over a long period, the heat from any desired source being supplied via circuits containing a medium of any desired chemical composition and purity. The storage medium in a watertight storage vessel is lowered into deep borehole in the earth, so as slightly to heat the adjacent earth mass, the capability of the latter to store heat for long periods being utilised. On extracting the stored heat to satisfy peak demand, the latent heat of the storage medium on changeover from the liquid to the solid state is utilised. On heat extraction by heat pump the quantity of stored heat is increased by the amount of heat from the surrounding earth and its water content, and by heat supplied by circuits. Devices to prevent bursting of the vessel and heat-transfer pipes due to alteration in the volume of the storage medium when changing from the fluid to the solid state.
|
