The parting mechanism is for the transverse wires of a grating formed by lengthwise and transverse wires fixed together where they cross. It is built into the machine producing the grating, which is moved continuously, or indexed, forward. The tools forming the parting mechanism are mounted on a driving shaft which is set at an angle to the axes of the transverse wires. The tools can be in the form of rotary knives, or of shears. The design requires relatively little power to operate the cutting tools.
