Process for production of beta -chloroalanine

A novel production process of beta -chloroalanine from chloroacetaldehyde is provided. In this process, a bisulfite or sulfite addition compound of chloroacetaldehyde is first reacted, in an aqueous solution, with ammonia and, then, reacted with hydrocyanic acid or a salt thereof. Thus, alpha -amino- beta -chloropropionitrile is formed. This alpha -amino- beta -chloropropionitrile is hydrolyzed under an acidic condition to form beta -chloroalanine.
