PURPOSE:To reduce the flickering phenomenon of a positive column by applying a magnetic field, which intersects electric field of a discharge tube, over almost the entire area of the positive column. CONSTITUTION:A straight fluorescent discharge tube 1 is charged with a mixture gas consisting of 75% of crypton and 25% of argon at 1.5Torr. A ferrite magnet 2, which is magnetized across its thickness and has a given width, is provided on the outer surface of the tube 1 along its longitudinal direction, in such a manner that the length of the magnet is approximately the same as that of the tube 1. As a result, magnetic field, which intersects the electric field, is applied over almost the entire area of a positive column. Consequently, any flickering due to shifting streak which is inherent to rare-gas discharge is prevented, and the luminous efficacy is enhanced. |
