The probe includes a long tube of stainless steel passing through a boxed handle. A pipe attached to the side of the main tube allows sterile inert gas to be introduced, while a second pipe is provided for an irrigation fluid. A lance which is electrically conducting is insulated by a PTFE plastics coating and protected by an outer sleeve. A terminal is attached to the head of this lance. The lance may be moved along the tube by a push-button on the end, moved against the force of a compression spring. The flow of irrigating liquid is controlled by a spring with a peg pressing down on a flexible part of the fluid pipe. A latch may hold the spring down to block the fluid flow. The butt end of the long tube may be attached to a vacuum line to withdraw waste liquid.
