The control system has detectors for detecting the position of the accelerator pedal. Operating devices control the engine's setting device. A control device selectively actuates one of two control strategies for controlling the vehicle. A computer is connected to the detectors, to the control device and to the operating devices. The computer performs specified calculations and operations including calculating the best position of the engine setting control and converting accelerator pedal position into the speed wanted by the driver.
