Binary vapor cycle method of electrical power generation wherein two refrigerant fluids can be used to operate an apparatus for generating mechanical and electrical power, in which the first condenser (18) serves as a heat source for the second evaporator (36). A vacuum is drawn on conduit (16) by pump (22) so that warm surface ocean water will evaporate to feed the first condenser (18), which is cooled by a refrigerant such as ammonia, the working fluid in the second heat pump. The evaporated ammonia, in turn, drives positive displacement pump (72) and is cooled by deep ocean water from pump (64). This apparatus solves the problem of operating a heat pump system with two sources that are relatively close in temperature.
|
