Ultrasonographic imaging process - using support coated with catalytic metallic layer, exposed in liq. medium contg. catalyst poison

Process for formation of ultrasonographic images comprises (a) placing a support coated with a catalytic metallic layer in direct contact with a liq. medium capable of propagating ultrasound; (b) imagewise exposing the support to modulated ultrasound in the presence of a catalyst poison; and (c) treating the exposed support with a physical development bath. The catalyst is e.g. Pd, applied by cathodic spraying or radiofrequency spraying. The catalyst poison used pref. contains a -SH gp. or a tautomeric form of this gp., and is esp. phenyl-mercapto-tetrazole, mercapto-2-benzothiazole or thiourea. The liq. medium is esp. water. Process allows prodn. of ultrasonographic images by physical development in the known way. The catalytic materials can be handled in ordinary ambient light and exposure energies of less than 3 can be used.
