The insulation consists of a number of loosely fixed, lapping metal plates attached by bolts to the vessel. Each bolt (21) has a spacer sleeve (10) bridging between a shoulder (24) on the bolt and the nut (8), optionally with the inclusion of washers (11,12). The spacer sleeve (10) carries pairs of metal sheet segments (13), between which the metal sheets (3) of the insulation are slidably held. Each insulation sheet (3) is fixed at one point by a bolt centrally on the upper part of the sheet; the other bolts vertically below this fixing bolt have elongated holes, while the remaining bolts on either side and below the fixing bolt have oversized circular holes in the metal insulating plates (3) to accommodate thermal movement. A long working life even at very high temps. is achieved.
