Omega-dodecanolactone and #-formyloxydodecanoic acid are prepared by reacting cyclododecanone with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of excess formic acid. The formic acid may be mixed with the hydrogen peroxide before the introduction of the cyclododecanone at between 0‹ and 40‹ C. or the hydrogen peroxide may be introduced to a formic acidcyclododecanone mixture at between 40‹ and 100‹ C. The products are separated by fractional distillation or extraction with organic solvents. |
