Thiophene derlvatives and fungicides for agricultural and horticultural purposes containing their active ingredients said derivatives. The thiophene derivatives are represented by the general formula (I) <CHEM> wherein X represents: H, alkalimetal, -NH4, -COR1, -CO- lower alkyl-R2, -CO@@@H2)n, di-lower alkylcarbamoyl, mono-lower alkylcarbamoyl, cycloalkylcarbamoyl, -COOR3, SO2R4, or - @(OR5)2; Y represents: -COOR6, H or -CO <CHEM> and Z represents -COOR6, -CN or -CO- <CHEM> provided that both Y and Z are not -COOR6 (R6 = alkyl, lower alkenyl or lower alkynyl).
