<p>Polymers containing recurring imino carbonic ester groups are prepared by reacting a polyfunctional organic cyanic ester of formula Ar(OCN)x in which Ar is any aromatic, araliphatic or heterocyclic radical which may be substituted and x us an integer of at least 2 with a di- or trihydroxy compound to form a resin having a plurality of recurring units <FORM:1060933/C3/1> in which R is an organic residue after removal of the -OH groups from the di- or trihydroxy compound. The reaction between the organic cyanic acid ester and hydroxy compound may be effected in solution in an organic solvent. Many suitable cyanic acid esters and hydroxyl compounds are specified. In Examples, the following were reacted: (1) 1,3-dicyanatobenzol with resorcinol, (2) 1,4-dicyanatobenzol with hydroquinone, (3) to (5) 4,41-dicyanato diphenyl dimethyl methane with (3) 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl dimethyl methane, (4) 1,4-di-(b -hydroxyethyl) benzol, and (5) 1,6-hexane diol, (6) polyethylene adipate with 1,4-dicyanatobenzol and (7) to (11) 4,41-dicyanato diphenyl dimethyl methane with (7) polyethylene adipate, (8) as in (7) but with 1,4-dicyanatobenzene in addition, (9) linear polypropylene glycol, (10) propoxylated trimethylol propane and (11) 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane.</p> |
