摘要 <p>The superconducting compound niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) is prepared by contacting HCl gas with niobium and tin at an elevated temperature so as to form the vaporized chlorides thereof and reducing the vaporized chlorides with H2 to deposit Nb3Sn. The HCl may be passed over the heated metals which may be in sintered form prepared by mixing and sintering tin and niobium or it may be in powdered form. The metal may be heated to a temperature of 400 to 1000 DEG C. and the reaction zone maintained at 800 to 900 DEG C. The mixture of Nb and Sn may contain 25 atom % Sn and 75 atom % Nb or more than 25 atom% (preferably 30 to 40 atom %) of Sn. The Nb3Sn may be deposited on a support in the form of a metal wire or tape the reaction zone being maintained at below 800 DEG C. and the wire or tape at 800-1100 DEG C. The wire or tape may be a nickel iron alloy containing 75% by wt. of Ni or gold plated Ni. The chlorides formed as intermediates in the reaction are NbCl3 and SnCl2.
