The cylinder head gasket for an internal combustion engine consists largely of a steel plate (1) with a large hole for the combustion chamber enclosing a sealing ring (3). This ring is attached to the plate only by four short bridging tongues (4). These project radially from the ring, for attachment to the metal plate by adhesive, welding, brazing etc., leaving an expansion channel between the tongues. The ring is deformed so as to seal a gap which is wider than the thickness of the steel plate, or the gap can be made narrower in the region of the ring. The ring can be made of a harder material than the plate. The plate incorporates openings for the cooling liquid circulating channels and the edges of these openings have soft material inserts around them, sprayed or vulcannised on.
