<p>Perylene tetracarboxylic diimides of formula (I) are new. In (I) i is isopropyl, R1 and R2 are both H, or one is isopropyl and the other is H. They are made by condensing perylene-3,4,9,10- tetracarboxylic acid (II) or its anhydride with the appropriate aniline in solvent or diluent (opt. excess aniline) at 180-230 deg.C. The condensn. can be carried out in presence of accelerators such as zinc chloride, and the prod. is filtered off at 80-120 deg.C opt. after dilution. Traces of (II) can be removed by boiling with dil. NaOH or Na2CO3, then further purificn. is by pptn. from U2SO4 or recrystallisation. (I) are incorporated into e.g. polystyrene block polymers, or copolymers of styrene with butadiene and acrylonitrile or acrylates. (I) are useful for mass colouring of plastics, esp. thermoplastics, and give clear, fluorescent orange colours of very good light fastness. They are esp. useful in plastic plates for concentrating light, (I) serving as fluorescent centres. (I) have better solubility in organic solvents and plastics than known bisarylamides.</p> |
