Needles for sewing machines can be manufactured more economically by the following process. The process begins with a short length of wire of suitable diameter (1). The greater part of the length is then forged flat and the width (6) of the flat portion is then cut down to a size slightly less than the original diameter (1) A longitudinal groove (7) is then formed on one side of the flattened surface and a hole (11) is punched through the bottom of the groove near the end (4) where a point is formed.
