The interchangeable coal pick for the cutting head of a mining machine has a cylindrical insert (5) of hard material, with a pointed tip (4), retained inside a cylindrical holder (1) with a sloping nose (21). The inset can be externally threaded almost from top to bottom, and located by a grab screw (10) through the wall of the holder, in the upper region. The bottom of the insert incorporates recesses (8) for a spanner, and a hole through the centre supplies fluid to one or more distributor holes (6) at the pointed tip. In an alternative design the threaded part extends only half-way up, and the insert is a plain cylinder at the top.
