The combined differential and brake system comprises a main housing (11) containing a differential housing (2) driven by an input shaft (10). Two half-shafts (13) are each capable of being driven either by the gears of the differential, or one or both shafts can be coupled to the housing (2) for drive. These couplings each consist of a hydraulically operated (5-7) bush (1) slidable on a shaft (13) to which it is rotationally connected via gear teeth (3). An inner cone (9) of the bush can engage a corresponding outer cone on the housing (2). An outer cone on the bush carries a brake lining (4) and can engage a corresponding inner cone (8) in the main housing (11).
