Electrically conductive fluids are heated ohmically by passing an electric current in the fluid between electrodes spaced along a pipe containing a flow of the fluid. The pipe 30 has an electrically insulating internal liner 37 and is cooled, e.g. by cooling water flowing through a cooling jacket 35 between inner and outer skins 32 and 33 of the pipe. The inner skin 32 supports the liner 37 and is perforated 50 to allow intimate cooling of the liner.
