PURPOSE:To increase the strength of a roll neck and a load on the bearing, in order to improve the capacity of a rolling mill, by lining the neck of backup roll with a liner provided in a specified thickness/diameter ratio, and by supporting this roll neck with a bearing metal of specified bearing width/diameter ratio. CONSTITUTION:The shaft liner 10 of thickness/diameter ratio, given by t/D<0.03, in which (t) is the liner's thickness and D is the outer diameter of the shaft, is fixed by the shrink fit method to the roll neck 8 of the backup roll 2 for impressing the rolling load to a couple of work rolls. Hereby, the temperature of the liner 10 is almost uniformized from surface to backside, so that the liner 10 does not cause the creep even if the bearing metal causes a burn out or the like. Accordingly, the diameter of the roll neck 8 can be enlarged relatively. Besides, the bearing width of the bearing metal 3 supporting the roll neck 8 is selected from a range L<=L/D<=1.5 (in which L is the bearing width), in order to increase the bearing capacity of the bearing metal 3. |
