A two dimensional integrated circuit network of light sensitive elements is at least as wide as five elements, has an optical spacing designed to embrace the widest of the characters and is about three times higher than the elements. A logic matrix responds to successive elements of a two dimensional sub-assembly of input signals from the network and recognises a character at a high rate in comparison to the rate of movement of the reader from one character to the other. Successive groups of the input signals are passed through the logic matrix in a sense designed to simulate the vertical movement of the reader through the reading field carrying the characters at a rate equal to the rate of displacement of the high character recognition rates.
|
