1308884 Crust breakers; charging electrolytic furnaces ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 12 July 1971 [17 July 1970] 32614/71 Heading F4B Apparatus for feeding alumina to an aluminium producing electrolytic furnace comprises a storage hopper 34, metering apparatus 36 and a fluidization conveyer 22 with feeder devices 29 introducing approximately equal portions at a number of feed locations. Each feed device is associated with a plunger 30 operated by a fluid motor 28 to break the crust 20. The fluidization conveyer comprises a substantially rectangular duct enclosing an air permeable hose 40 supported by'a rigid tube 41 said conveyer having openings controlled by adjustable plates 46 to branch pipes 26 feeding the fluidized alumina 42 to the feeder devices 29. Suitable adjustment of the plates 46 ensures that approximately equal quantities of alumina are distributed by each device 29. The metering apparatus 36, Fig. 5, includes an upper feed valve 50, a container 52 enclosing a hood 82 carrying a rod 84 adjacent a scale 86, and a lower valve 38 feeding the fluidization conveyer 22. The upper feed valve 50 comprises a box 56 with a delivery spout 60 and an air permeable membrane 68 supplied by an air tube 72 to fluidize the material entering from the hopper 34. A plate 57 obturates the membrane 68 below said hopper. The lower valve 38 incorporates an air chamber 88 below a permeable membrane 92 and fluidized material flows under a cone 98 into a spout 96 entering the conveyer 22. The quantity of material handled is controlled by fixing the hood 82 by a set screw 90 on the rod 84 according to a reading on the scale 86.
