In a variable magnification line- by-line photocopier using a charged photoconductive drum, the surface potential of the drum is measured, for a given magnification using reference illumination, and charge is applied to the drum in dependence on the measured potential. The reference illumination may be provided by reflection of original-illuminating lamp 6 by a reflecting plate 14 or by a separate light source which replaces plate 14. The charge may be applied by corona dischargers 2 and 3. The potential may be measured by detector 49. <IMAGE>
