PREPARATION OF HYDROCARBON SOLUTIONS OF ETHYLENE POLYMERS A process is provided for the direct preparation of a hot hydrocarbon solution of an ethylene polymer having an inherent viscosity of at least 3.5. The solution is prepared by polymerizing ethylene in the hydrocarbon at a temperature of at least 130.degree.C in the presence of a polymerization initiator prepared by reacting an aluminum alkyl with a supported, chemically-modified, transition metal chloride compound prepared by a multistep process in which: 1. A finely-divided polymer such as polyethylene is suspended in an alkanol solution of a magnesium compound, e.g., a solution of magnesium chloride in methanol, 2. The alkanol is vaporized to deposit magnesium compoundalkanol complex on the support, 3. The product of Step (2) is suspended in a liquid hydrocarbon and reacted with an aluminum alkyl compound such as diethyl aluminum chloride, and 4. The product of Step (3) is reacted with a transition metal chloride compound such as titanium tetrachloride.
|
