MANUFACTURE OF OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To easily manufacture an optical fiber by putting a base material formed by a vapor-phase axial sticking method in a pipe made of glass of a specified salt followed by heating and drawing. CONSTITUTION:Borosilicate glass or aluminosilicate glass is used as a material for a clad or a jacket to make the differences between it and a core or the clad in m.p. and expansion coefficient smaller, thereby facilitating the manufacture of an optical fiber. Base material 44 is first put in pipe 47 made of borosilicate glass or aluminosilicate glass, and the lower end of pipe 47 is sealed. Pipe 47 is evacuated in heating furnace 48, and an optical fiber is drawn and wound with winder 49. The resulting fiber has a high refractive index difference.
