PURPOSE:To provide a machinable state for precise cutting of ceramics by applying ultrasonic oscillations to the ceramics being machined while making the resistance to brittleness apparently much lower than the actual resistance. CONSTITUTION:The ceramic 1 to be machined is secured to the top end of a hone 2 by means of screws or adhesives. An ultrasonic longitudinal or torsional oscillation type vibrator 3 is attached to the end surface of the tail of the hone 2. On the oscillation nodes generated on the hone 2, flanges 4 and 5 are provided, whose peripheries are secured by a spindle chuck 7 through a sleeve 6. A tool 9 which is highly resistant to abration is secured to a tool holder 8. The ceramic 1 receives as an oscillation stress a reversible tensile stress which accounts for 13% of the tensile stress. Said state improves the machinability and facilitates the precise cutting. |
