The machine is intended for moving bottles from a table (13) into sets (4,5) of bottle crates (3) on a lower level support table (11), or vice versa, by a gripper head (1) which is carried by a pair of endless chains (8) driven to move the head upwards (14), then along a quarter circle (16) up and horizontally (17) forward, a quarter circle (15) down and vertically (12) down by a greater amount. The chains run over successive chain wheel sets (19,18) above, and return wheels (29,30) below the tables. The chains are driven such that along the longer upward movement (12) and curve (15), the head is accelerated from zero to max. speed. Then the head is decelerated to zero. The chain wheel sets have a larger wheel (20), whose diameter equals half the horizontal head displacement (22), and a smaller wheel (21).
