The mechanism is intended for moving bottles from a table into sets of bottle crates on a crate support table, or vice versa, by a gripper head, which is carried by a pair of moving chains, or the like. The latter are driven to move the head upwards along a semi-circle forwards, and then downwards. The chains run over successive chain wheels above, and return wheels below the tables. The drive is so arranged that over all or most of the upward curve the head is accelerated and over all or most of the downward curve it is decelerated. The tables are at the same level and the vertical portions of the head movement approximately equal the height of the crates.
