A fuel assembly comprises elongated parallel fuel rods retained in evenly spaced relation and arranged in two groups of parallel rows at right angles to one another, each row extending across the entire width of the assembly with the exception of one outer row which extends only a small portion of the way across the width of the assembly there being the same number of rows in each direction with the exception of the partial row. Groups of four of these fuel assemblies can be arranged so as to form a central cruciform control rod passage. A reactor core can be built up from such fuel assemblies, each being of the same configuration and dimensions, the fuel assemblies throughout the core being interchanged and replaced as desired and it being necessary to have in inventory only one specific design of fuel assembly.
