A silver halide photographic emulsion containing the compound represented by the formula (I): R1-(X-R3)m-X-R2 (I) wherein R1 and R2 each represents an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms substituted with two or more substituents selected from -OH, -NHR4, -COOR4, -CONH2, -SO3H, -COOM, or -SO3M, R3 represents an alkylene group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms which may be substituted by -OH, R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, X represents a sulfur or oxygen atom, provided at least one X is a sulfur atom, m represents 0 or an integer of 1 to 4, and M represents an alkali metal atom.
