SAFETY ARRANGEMENTS COMPRISING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR COVERING MATERIALS FOR PRESSURE VESSELS

Pressure vessels for holding liquefied gases under pressure are provided with an interior wall covering of expanded highly heat-conductive mesh and a heat penetration-reducing exterior coating comprising an insulative, intumescent or ablative material. On accidental exposure of the vessel to a fire hazard, the interior covering and coating serve to disperse and dissipate heat that is absorbed by vessel and its contents and delays the penetration of heat into the vessel from the exterior, so that weakening of the vessel wall to the point where it may rupture under the internallygenerated pressure is prevented or delayed.
