PURPOSE:To obtain phenol in high yield, advantageously in heat-economy, with a catalyst of long life, by the oxidation of benzene and an alcohol with O2 in the presence of the catalyst having a structure of Zn-P system, etc., at relatively low reaction temperatures, for a short contact time. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol expressed by the formula ROH (R is 1-4C alkyl), etc., is added to benzene and catalytically oxidized with O2, in the presence of a catalyst having a composition expressed by the formula MaPbOc (M is an element selected from the group consisting of Zn, Mn, Sr, Zr, Bi and V; a, b, and c are numbers of atoms; when a is ixed at 1, b is 0.01-6; c is determined in accordance with the valences of M and P, usually 1-17), at 500-620 deg.C, preferably at 600 deg.C or below, for 1-5sec, preferably 2-3sec, to give phenol. Elements M and P, the components of the catalyst, are used in the form of oxides, e.g. zinc phosphate, or in the mixture of an oxide, e.g. ZnO or MnO, with an oxide, e.g. P2O5. |
